This year I have decided not to make any New Year’s resolutions, for the simple fact I never stick to them. Now it may seem a bit of a copout but I find when you feel forced to do something it makes you even more likely that you won’t do it. For example last year at this time I tried to quit smoking but I couldn’t do it, too much pressure, however much later in the year I kicked the habit just because I wanted to, also going on a holiday with non smokers who hate the habit made it easy.
What I’m saying is that forcing yourself to do something at the start of the year because you feel you should have to is not the way to go about it, instead do it in your own time when you’re ready. It’s like when people join the gym, go everyday for the first couple of weeks then suddenly not at all, (you know who you are) they have put too much pressure and emphasis on going and burn out before they get started. Instead you should build up slowly especially if you’re not used to exercising regularly and gently ease your way into it you will probably find you stick to it longer.
So this year I will be conscious of my health and well being and take action when and if I need to and not force myself to do anything to change unless I really have to. That way I should achieve some of the goals I eventually want to achieve, without the pressure.
